John B. Lucy

John Lucy provides practical and creative solutions to help clients achieve their objectives efficiently and cost-effectively. He is an effective advocate who strives to attain the best possible results for each client; keeping them informed and involved in strategic decisions from start to finish. He has extensive experience in civil litigation and trial work before all state and federal courts in Maine, as well as in arbitration, mediation, and negotiation, and appellate matters before the Maine Supreme Judicial Court and the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit.
John’s practice areas include business and commercial litigation, insurance law and coverage advice, personal injury litigation, real estate litigation, professional liability defense, product liability, construction litigation, risk management, and alternative dispute resolution. His clients range from large manufacturers of food, trucks, machinery, chemicals and other products, to insurance companies, financial institutions, municipalities and schools, to Maine family businesses and individuals. John defends insurance agents, real estate agents, dentists, and other Maine professionals in claims against them, including before state licensing boards, commissions, and professional agencies. He is often asked to represent clients in mediation or arbitration settings, and is hired by other attorneys to help their clients resolve cases in mediation.
Born in Harvey, Illinois, John has lived in Maine since 1969. He is a graduate of the University of Maine (B.A., high distinction, 1986), where he played college football and was elected to the Pi Sigma Alpha honor society, and of the University of Maine School of Law (J.D., 1990), where he won state and national appellate advocacy competitions. Since 1990, he has been admitted to practice law in Maine, the United States District Court for the District of Maine, and the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. John has successfully briefed, argued and won notable cases before the Maine Supreme Judicial Court and the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. Based in the Bangor office of the Firm, John is a member of the Defense Research Institute, Maine State Bar Association, Maine Trial Lawyers Association, Penobscot County Bar Association, and John Waldo Ballou American Inn of Court. He has been an invited speaker before the Maine State Bar Association on matters within his practice areas.
Away from the office, John and his wife, Allison, stay busy with the daily adventure of raising three sons. John is a former high school football coach who happily moonlights most of the year as a volunteer coach of youth football, basketball and baseball. He also enjoys camping, hiking and fishing with his family.
